The origins of crochet undoubtedly go back to the earliest uses of threads for decorative and practical purposes, and one of the continuing appeals of the craft has been the speed with which attractive results are obtained. Ena Maidens, an experienced crochet teacher and a well-known exhibitor of her own crochet work designs, has set down the basic techniques so that anyone can learn to crochet from this book, and then shows some of the prettiest – and more unusual — variations. These include the delicate Irish crochet, the bold colours of Bosnian crochet, hairpin lace and broomstick crochet (also known as jiffy lace), the form that probably gives the quickest results.
An interesting inclusion is the Chinese-inspired tambour embroidery, which has recently enjoyed a revival, and framewoven crochet lace, which can be made in a comparatively simple form on a small wooden frame. Many readers will also be delighted to see that the author has written chapters on Tunisian crochet, with its own type of hook and technique, and on Continental looping and filet crochet.
There are stitch instructions for each of the crochet varieties described and patterns for garments and accessories that can be made in the different forms, fully illustrated with photographs and line drawings. There are explanatory charts for crochet terms, symbols and hook sizes and a very useful final section on the care of crochet.
